Tidal gates & timing

  • Leave Weymouth to pass east of Portland Bill as the race eases; never go through it.
  • Cross-tide for most of the passage: work out one course to steer over the whole crossing rather than leg by leg.
  • Avoid arriving off Cap de la Hague with the stream setting you into the Alderney Race.

Hazards

  • Portland Race and the Shambles bank
  • Casquets traffic separation scheme lanes: cross on a heading at right angles
  • Strong cross-set off the Cotentin coast

Pilotage

  • Enter Cherbourg by the Passe de l'Ouest or Passe de l'Est; the outer harbour is huge and safe in any weather

Ports of refuge

  • Portland Harbour
  • Braye, Alderney (only with a fair tide)
  • Cherbourg

Suggested departure

  • Early morning for a daylight landfall, or overnight for practice with lights
