Tidal gates & timing

  • Through the Strait the surface current runs east into the Mediterranean; go west on the west-going tide, close inshore on the Spanish side.
  • Avoid passing Tarifa in a strong Levante: wind against the tide gives steep seas.

Hazards

  • Gibraltar traffic separation scheme and very heavy shipping
  • Levante and Poniente acceleration in the Strait
  • Fishing gear and tuna nets off Barbate and Trafalgar
  • Orca interactions reported off south-west Iberia: check current guidance

Pilotage

  • Cádiz: follow the buoyed channel into the bay; Puerto América marina sits beside the city

Ports of refuge

  • Cartagena
  • Almería
  • Almerimar
  • Gibraltar / La Línea
  • Barbate

Suggested departure

  • Leave on a settled forecast and time your arrival at Tarifa for the west-going stream
