RYA Day Skipper Practical is a must for skippers who wish to take out their family and friends. It the entry level to skippering and a minimum qualification.

We work hard on our day skipper courses to ensure you gain the confidence of skippering and managing a crew effecently.
The course is delivered over 5 days or can be split over 2 – 3 weekends where practical.

Day skipper theory
We advise that you consider the Day Skipper theory prior to the practical course to build your therotical knowledge.
We also offer a two week combination course; covering all the theory and practical sailing, plenty of sailing every day, and a mix of theory as you progress through the course.
What do you need to take the RYA Day Skipper course?
If you’re planning a flotilla vacation or a bareboat charter, this course is for you. It’s designed for individuals who want to confidently steer their own vessel with friends and family on board. Recommended prior knowledge: Nautical theory at the level of Day Skipper or equivalent.
Have sailed 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 overnight hours.
Be at least 16 years of age.
Course Structure
To obtain the Day Skipper Certificate, the student must complete a minimum of 5 days of classes.
The course offers a comprehensive introduction to navigation, chart work and the basics of seamanship. The course is invaluable if you want to learn how to make decisions on board. It is aimed at anyone who wants to skipper safely by day in familiar waters. This course can also help you get the best from your electronic equipment.
After these sessions, you will have the confidence and ability to helm a small yacht day and night. There is no mileage limitation with the license, but familiarity with coastal waters is recommended.
What will you learn with the Day Skipper?
In five days, you will develop the skills to helm a cruising yacht under the guidance of our experienced instructors. While this course is more demanding than the Competent Crew course, we’ll set aside time to enjoy sailing and some good meals in anchorages along the way.
