RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew is the ideal starting point if you are new to sailing or have only ever been a guest on board. Over a full live‑aboard week you will learn how to be a useful, confident member of the crew while enjoying Mediterranean sailing and life at sea.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for complete beginners and those with a little experience who want to learn properly from the start. It is perfect if you plan to sail with friends or family, join flotillas, or prepare for RYA Day Skipper in the future.

You do not need any theory knowledge before joining – we will introduce you gently to the basics of seamanship, safety and life on board.

What You Will Learn

Personal safety and moving safely around the boat
Basic ropework, knots and use of winches
Hoisting, lowering and trimming sails
Helming under sail and power
Coming alongside, mooring and anchoring as part of the crew
Keeping a lookout and understanding basic collision regulations
Living comfortably on board and sharing duties

Sail handling, reefing and stowage
Rowing a dinghy and coming alongside
Man overboard procedures and personal safety equipment
Helm and crew roles for tacking and gybing
