ICC training course international certificate of competence

ICC – International Certificate of Competence

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is widely recognised as evidence of basic boating competence for skippers wishing to charter or operate boats in many European and Mediterranean countries. Our ICC training and assessment helps you gain the skills and confidence to enjoy international cruising safely.

At a Glance

  • Level: Skippers seeking recognition of competence for international waters
  • Vessels: Typically up to 24m (subject to category and national rules)
  • Location: Mediterranean coastal waters
  • Outcome: ICC issued via the RYA (subject to eligibility and successful assessment)

Who This Is For

The ICC is aimed at leisure skippers who want a formal document proving their competence when chartering or using their own boat abroad. It is particularly useful in the Mediterranean, where charter companies and authorities frequently ask for it.

You should already have some practical experience as skipper or active crew. If you are new to boating, we may recommend completing RYA Day Skipper or other training first before attempting an ICC assessment.

Training & Assessment Options

  • ICC with training: A short practical course focusing on the skills and knowledge required, followed by assessment.
  • Direct assessment: For experienced skippers who meet the eligibility criteria and simply need the certificate.
